Swedish lycanthro-punk veteran WOLFBRIGADE will release its 12th album, Howl From Underground, Oct. 9 through Metal Blade Records, less than two years after 2024’s Life Knife Death.
For the new record, WOLFBRIGADE deliberately disrupted a recording process it had followed for roughly a decade, bringing in an outside producer and mixer rather than handling those duties itself.
“For the last decade we’ve recorded, produced, and mixed our albums ourselves,” WOLFBRIGADE said. “This time we wanted to work with someone from outside the band whose work we respect and who we felt would understand what WOLFBRIGADE is about.”
That person was Lawrence Mackrory, whose credits include MESHUGGAH, KATATONIA, PARADISE LOST and BLOODBATH. The album was recorded at Necromorbus Studio, the converted Baptist church that has also hosted work by WATAIN and MAYHEM.
Howl From Underground also marks the return of drummer David “Dadde” Stark, who previously played with WOLFBRIGADE from 2002 through 2015.
“Everything clicked immediately,” the band said. “The chemistry was still there.”
WOLFBRIGADE describes the resulting album as its loudest, fullest and thickest-sounding record to date.
The band's self-described “lycanthro punk” identity remains firmly intact. The term has followed WOLFBRIGADE through much of its three-decade history, describing the intersection of its d-beat and raw-punk roots with the considerably more ferocious metallic sound it developed around them.
“Lycanthro Punk has always been about that force which refuses to be tamed,” WOLFBRIGADE said. “The same force that runs through myth, folklore, and philosophy throughout history. The wolf is one name for it. Dionysus another. A restlessness that survives civilization.”
WOLFBRIGADE traces its recording history back to the 1990s, when its first three albums were released under the WOLFPACK name.
The current lineup consists of vocalist Micke Dahl, guitarists Erik Norberg and Jocke Rydbjer, bassist Johan Erken and drummer Stark.
