MeK Blurs Human and Machine on Debut Single “Unawaken”

London-based modern metal project MeK will make its official debut Oct. 9 with “Unawaken,” an ambitious first statement combining crushing metal, industrial electronics and cinematic atmosphere with an existential concept built around consciousness, identity and the increasingly uncertain boundary between human and constructed worlds.
MeK is the creation of London musician and producer Faust Perez, who has spent more than 15 years working within the city’s music scene. Perez is currently involved with metal band DAMIM and also performs live bass with LOWEN, but MeK represents a separate creative undertaking built around his own music and an expanding audiovisual mythology known as MeK // CONSTRUCT.
“Unawaken” introduces that world through an internal argument between two sides of the same consciousness.
One voice searches for justification to continue living and questions whether existence requires some larger purpose. The opposing voice attacks the question itself, asking why life must carry divine or transcendent meaning before it can be considered worth living.
Even the title is intentionally contradictory. Becoming “Unawaken” means awakening from the belief that one has already discovered the answer — rejecting certainty rather than pursuing another supposedly final revelation.
That philosophical conflict is reflected musically as the track moves between contemporary metal, electronic and industrial textures, atmospheric passages and larger cinematic movements. Rather than resolving with conventional enlightenment, the song concludes through integration: the human and the Construct become joined.
Within the larger MeK // CONSTRUCT mythology, that union creates The Medium, a human conduit connecting the organic world to the Construct rather than a hero who conquers or controls it.
The story has been developing before listeners have even heard the debut single.
MeK has spent the weeks ahead of “Unawaken” releasing a sequence of short audiovisual pieces called TRANSMISSIONS, progressively revealing the MeK // CONSTRUCT universe. The campaign moves through CONTACT, RECOGNITION, FRACTURE, RESISTANCE, DEVELOPMENT, CONVERGENCE and FINAL APPROACH before culminating with UNAWAKEN.
According to the project, the introductory campaign generated more than 110,000 social-media views during its first two weeks.
Perez wrote and composed “Unawaken” and performs guitar, programming, electronics and vocals. Felix Lawrie shares main vocal duties, with additional vocals from Mark Antoniades.
Edd Amos performs bass and Damjan Stefanovic handles drums.
The production team also brings considerable heavy-music experience to MeK’s debut. Perez produced the track, while Matt Hyde handled mixing with additional mixing by Scott Elliott. Joel Wanasek mastered the finished recording.
Caitlin Simone Stokes created and directed the accompanying music video, which will arrive alongside the single Oct. 9 and provide the full visual culmination of the TRANSMISSIONS campaign.
For MeK, “Unawaken” is less an introduction to a conventional new band than the opening piece of a larger interconnected project in which music, imagery and narrative develop together.
The question at its center is equally unconventional: perhaps awakening does not mean finally discovering the truth.
Perhaps it means becoming willing to question the answer.
