Flint, Michigan heavy-music outlier KING 810 has announced a new album, La Grande Mort or Silence of God, due Nov. 27, and released “I KNOW YOU HEARD OF ME” as its latest preview.
The record is positioned as a thematic successor to the band’s 2016 album La Petite Mort or a Conversation with God, but not as a direct continuation in sound or structure. Instead, KING 810 is framing the new material as another major evolution of its mix of metal, alternative, electronic, hip-hop and psychedelic elements.
“I KNOW YOU HEARD OF ME” serves as the album’s opening statement.
“‘I KNOW YOU HEARD OF ME’ is the introduction to the record,” vocalist David Gunn said. “I needed to introduce myself so that everyone could remember they have, in fact, known me all along.”
Gunn said the song revolves around the idea that people across history have repeatedly recognized something fundamentally wrong with the world around them, only to be ignored, punished or destroyed for saying so.
“This one’s about the idea that we’re not the first to notice something’s off about reality — that people have been trying to warn each other for thousands of years, and getting burned for it,” Gunn said.
He described the track as something closer to a transmission than a conventional narrative, saying its origin is difficult even for him to define.
For La Grande Mort or Silence of God, KING 810 once again worked in Flint with longtime producer Josh Schroeder, whose credits include LORNA SHORE. The sessions feature Gunn on vocals, guitar and keys, Eugene Gill on bass, John Paul Vega on drums and Bryce Ballinger on guitar.
The album continues KING 810’s long-running focus on violence, spirituality, isolation and the mythology surrounding its hometown, while broadening the band’s sonic palette beyond straightforward metal.
The new record follows a particularly active period for KING 810, which has released multiple full-length projects over the past 18 months while maintaining an aggressive touring schedule.
The band recently completed a run of U.K. and European festival appearances and will return to the road this fall for its Autumnal Rites headline tour with GUERRILLA WARFARE.
That run will culminate Oct. 30 at The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, Michigan, where KING 810 will perform La Petite Mort or a Conversation with God in full for the first time. The show falls on Devil’s Night, giving the anniversary performance an especially fitting setting.
