Alternative metal outfit Flat Black is back in the studio recording its sophomore album, the follow-up to the band's 2024 debut, Dark Side Of The Brain.
Flat Black has entered Dave Grohl's Studio 606 with producer Jay Ruston, whose production credits include Anthrax and Stone Sour.
According to ThePRP:
"Flat Black have hit the studio for their sophomore album. Footage recently shared on social media by the band finds them holed up at Dave Grohl's Studio 606 with producer Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Stone Sour) at the helm. The aforementioned alternative metal band, who feature ex-Five Finger Death Punch guitarist Jason Hook, released their debut album Dark Side Of The Brain back in 2024."
Flat Black was formed by guitarist Jason Hook following his departure from Five Finger Death Punch in 2020 after more than a decade with the multi-platinum hard rock band. Rather than attempting to recreate his previous success, Hook assembled a new lineup focused on original material and a distinct musical identity.
The band's lineup features Jason Hook (guitar), Wes Horton (vocals), Nick Diltz (bass), and Rob Pierce (drums). Together, the musicians have developed a sound that blends modern alternative metal with hard rock, combining heavy riffs, memorable hooks, and polished production.
Released in 2024, Dark Side Of The Brain introduced Flat Black to audiences with a collection of songs that showcased Hook's songwriting and guitar work while establishing the chemistry of the new lineup. The album demonstrated that Flat Black is more than a vehicle for a former Five Finger Death Punch member, instead presenting a band intent on carving out its own place in modern hard rock.
Recording at Studio 606 places Flat Black inside one of rock's most respected recording facilities. Owned by Dave Grohl, the California studio houses the legendary Neve 8028 analog console made famous in Grohl's documentary Sound City. Over the years, the studio has hosted recording sessions for numerous acclaimed rock and metal artists.
The sessions are being produced by Jay Ruston, one of modern hard rock and metal's most respected producers. Ruston's résumé includes work with Anthrax, Stone Sour, Steel Panther, Uriah Heep, Corey Taylor, Black Star Riders, and numerous other artists. His production style is known for combining clarity, power, and modern sonics while preserving each band's unique identity.
Flat Black has not yet announced a title, release date, or additional details regarding the new album. With recording now underway, fans can expect further updates as work progresses on the band's second full-length release.
The upcoming album represents an important milestone for Flat Black as the band builds upon the foundation established by Dark Side Of The Brain. With Jason Hook leading an experienced lineup, Jay Ruston producing, and Studio 606 serving as the recording venue, the sophomore effort is positioned to further establish Flat Black as a rising force in modern hard rock and alternative metal.
