DOWN is powering through its late-summer Strap It DOWN Tour ’26 with HELMET, and the response has been remarkably consistent: The New Orleans heavyweights are not simply revisiting the past. They are hitting stages with purpose, sounding dangerous and giving audiences their first live taste of a new chapter that will culminate with Volume V this fall.

The run began Aug. 15 at The Eastern in Atlanta with HELMET and SPIRIT IN THE ROOM, pairing three distinctly different approaches to heaviness on the same bill. DOWN supplies the massive Southern grooves, HELMET brings Page Hamilton’s precision-driven rhythmic attack and SPIRIT IN THE ROOM opens the evening with a darker collision of noise, punk, psychedelia and industrial atmosphere.

More important than the routing has been the response. Reviews from multiple stops have praised DOWN’s performance while also giving HELMET considerable credit for strengthening a touring package that offers much more than a recognizable support act beneath the headliner.

Opening night in Atlanta set the tone. Chris Collett, reviewing the Aug. 15 show for No Flash Needed, described DOWN as sounding “heavy, comfortable and very much alive.” The review also singled out HELMET’s tightness and Hamilton’s distinctive guitar attack, reinforcing the contrast between the two bands rather than treating the evening as little more than a DOWN show with openers attached.

That contrast has become one of the strengths of the tour. HELMET attacks with control, precision and sharply defined rhythmic angles. DOWN works from the opposite direction, leaning into riffs that seem designed to make the floor buckle beneath them. Put together, the bands deliver two very different interpretations of heavy music without either sounding out of place.

The tour has also given DOWN an opportunity to begin moving beyond its catalog. At Cleveland’s House of Blues on Aug. 19, the band performed “Blood Oath” live for the first time, coinciding with the song’s release as the first preview of Volume V. Instead of protecting the new material until the album arrives, DOWN immediately put it where the band’s music ultimately has to prove itself: onstage.

That matters because this run carries considerably more weight than another opportunity to revisit NOLA. DOWN has announced Volume V for Nov. 20 through Nuclear Blast Records, marking the band’s first full-length studio album since Down III: Over the Under in 2007. The record features Philip H. Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Kirk Windstein, Jimmy Bower and Pat Bruders, with “Blood Oath” providing the first public glimpse of what the lineup has created in the studio.

The new-record context changes the character of these shows. DOWN can still unload established favorites including “Lifer,” “Hail the Leaf,” “Ghosts Along the Mississippi,” “Stone the Crow,” “Eyes of the South” and “Bury Me in Smoke,” but those songs no longer represent the entire story. By working new material into the set, the band has begun connecting one of heavy music’s most revered catalogs with its first new full-length album in nearly two decades.

HELMET has provided an effective counterweight throughout the run. Hamilton and company remain built around economical riffs, abrupt rhythmic shifts and the disciplined guitar attack that made the band such an influential force in heavy music during the 1990s. Rather than competing stylistically with DOWN, HELMET makes the bill stronger because the bands arrive at heaviness from completely different directions.

The Strap It DOWN run continues through Worcester before DOWN breaks away for Berzerkus appearances in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 28 and Wantagh, New York, on Aug. 29. HELMET and SPIRIT IN THE ROOM rejoin the run Aug. 30 at The Fillmore Silver Spring, followed by Cincinnati on Sept. 1 and Chicago on Sept. 2.

For a band that can disappear for years between major bursts of activity, DOWN suddenly looks anything but dormant. The reviews have been strong, audiences are responding and new material is already being tested in front of crowds with Volume V waiting on the other side of the tour.
