“The Holy Ground” is getting a massive injection of high-octane melodic rock. Festival organizers have confirmed that Sheffield legends Def Leppard will officially make their debut appearance at Germany's legendary Wacken Open Air, anchoring the festival's monumental 35th anniversary line-up. 

The NWOBHM veterans-turned-global icons are scheduled to bring their massive catalog of stadium anthems to the festival's famous “Harder stage” on Thursday, July 30, 2026, closing out the night with a definitive, headline-level late-night performance from 22:15 to 00:00. 

Bracing The Holy Ground For Major Pop-Rock Charm

While Wacken has historically built its multi-decade reputation on the foundational concrete of extreme metal, thrash, and power metal, the inclusion of Def Leppard marks a deliberate and highly anticipated celebration for the festival's milestone 35th birthday. Joe Elliott, Phil Collen, Rick Savage, Vivian Campbell, and Rick Allen will transport the mud-soaked northern German village back to the height of the 1980s arena rock explosion, armed with multi-platinum pillars like Pyromania and the diamond-certified masterpiece Hysteria.

The weekend will also feature bittersweet milestones across the festival grounds, including the final German festival performance from Brazilian metal legends Sepultura on their farewell run, and the definitive final live bow for German speed metal pioneers Running Wild.

Def Leppard’s trek to Wacken marks a major cornerstone of their broader 2026 European tour plans, directly following a massive 12-date winter residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas earlier this year and a relentless run through European arenas this summer.
