ANTHRAX Goes Cinematic With New “The Edge of Perfection” Video

ANTHRAX has unveiled the cinematic video for “The Edge of Perfection,” the second single from the band's long-awaited 12th studio album, Cursum Perficio.
Released July 10, the track follows the first single, “It's for the Kids,” offering another compelling preview of the new record ahead of its Sept. 18 release through Megaforce Records. Cursum Perficio marks ANTHRAX's first studio album since 2016's For All Kings.
“The Edge of Perfection” opens with clean, atmospheric guitar work before Charlie Benante's explosive drumming launches the song into far heavier territory. Joey Belladonna delivers one of his most dynamic vocal performances in recent memory, soaring over dense riffing, layered harmonies and constantly shifting arrangements.
Clocking in at nearly seven minutes, the song stretches well beyond the traditional thrash template. It moves seamlessly between restrained tension, crushing heaviness and an expansive melodic chorus while maintaining the precision and momentum that have defined ANTHRAX throughout its career.
Guitarist Scott Ian has set lofty expectations for the track, calling it the band's "apex predator" and stating that he believes it is the finest song ANTHRAX has ever written. Ian said the song was inspired by the love he feels for his wife and son, and by the realization that even life's most perfect moments can disappear without warning.
"When I think about songs like 'Only' and 'Indians,' you know that you hit something and you can feel it," Benante said. "That's the way I felt about 'The Edge of Perfection.'"
Rather than producing a standard performance video, ANTHRAX partnered with Academy Award-winning makeup artist and filmmaker Joel Harlow to create a short horror-fantasy film.
The video follows a man whose visit to a mysterious magic club spirals into a confrontation with supernatural evil, while intercutting narrative sequences with performance footage from Ian, Benante, Belladonna, bassist Frank Bello and guitarist Jonathan Donais.
The production features martial artist Wes Scarpias, actress Ashley Edner-Tancharoen and actors Troy James, Rod Maxwell and Fedor Steer. Legendary special-effects pioneer Rick Baker also makes an appearance.
Filled with elaborate practical effects, striking makeup work and unsettling imagery, the video's dreamlike atmosphere mirrors the song's central theme—the fragile balance between fulfillment and the fear of losing it.
More importantly, "The Edge of Perfection" demonstrates that ANTHRAX is approaching its first studio album in nearly a decade with ambition rather than nostalgia. While the track retains the band's unmistakable rhythmic attack, razor-sharp riffing and Belladonna's signature vocal style, its expansive arrangement and cinematic scope push well beyond simply recreating past successes.
Work on Cursum Perficio began in earnest in 2022 at Dave Grohl's Studio 606 in Los Angeles. Produced by Jay Ruston alongside the band, the 11-song album also includes "It's for the Kids," "Everybody's Got a Plan," "NYC93," "T.O.M.B." and the title track.
If "The Edge of Perfection" is any indication, ANTHRAX isn't simply returning—they're raising the bar. Both musically and visually, the band's latest single suggests Cursum Perficio could become one of the most ambitious releases of its storied career.
